Victorian Jet Locket-Antique Shake locket-Antique Floating Locket-Diamond and Jet Locket

$750.00

An antique jet locket from the Victorian era has been given new life in the "Victoria" necklace. Filled with raw, un-drilled diamond cubes, this refined and delicate locket receives an unexpected accent. The locket is suspended from an entirely hand made gemstone chain which includes the following stones: London blue topaz rondelles, tiny blue/gray sapphires, faceted black spinel rondelles, and petite freshwater pearls. Each stone is wired individually, using mixed metals of 14kt gold filled wire and oxidized sterling silver wire.

Details about this gorgeous locket: During Victorian times, lockets were often worn as mourning jewelry, and a lock of intricately braided hair from one's lost loved one was often enclosed inside. Whitby jet (a fossilized wood) was made popular by Queen Victoria, and mourning jewelry during her time was often embellished with jet. This particular locket features faceted black jet crystals, mounted by pins, along the edge. I am not certain if the black stones are crystals, or genuine Whitby jet, so I am going to refer to them as crystals. The bezel front of the locket is absolutely breathtaking, with its intricate detail of repoussé work in a gold tone metal. When purchased, the antique dealer suspected that the gold might in fact be 18kt, but was not tested. (It is most likely a thick plating of gold over a base metal.) The window in which the raw diamonds float beneath appears to be quartz crystal, not glass.

This is an absolutely gorgeous piece of history, made wearable for contemporary women.

Measures approximately 18 1/2" in length and closes with a 14kt gold fill lobster claw clasp.

Is vermeil the same as "gold plate"?

Many people have misconceptions about vermeil, because they confuse it with "gold plate". However, they are vastly different! Vermeil must meet the FTC standard of 100 millionths of an inch (2 ½ microns) of fine gold layered over sterling silver. In order for a piece to be labeled legally as "vermeil", the item must not be less than 10 karat gold and have a substantial thickness, with a minimum thickness of 2 ½ microns. In contrast, "gold plating" is a miniscule layer of solid gold applied to a brass base. The plating does not compose any measurable proportion of the product’s total weight, and is estimated to be 0.05% or less of the metal product. Gold plating will wear off rather quickly and expose the brass base product.

Is "Gold Filled" the same as "gold plated"?

No! Gold-filled is constructed in two or three layers. The core metal is jewelers’ brass. The gold alloy is then bonded to one or both surfaces of the brass core with heat and pressure. The bonded raw material is then sold as sheet or wire to jewelry manufacturers for use in designs. Gold-filled is legally required to contain 5% or 1/20 gold by weight. This 5% is then described by the karatage of the gold alloy. Most gold-filled is 12kt or 14kt gold-filled. All of the gold-filled used in my designs is 14kt. It is a beautiful and affordable alternative to solid gold.

Care instructions

Artisan jewelry is not mass produced, and needs to be cared for properly. Please do not wear your jewelry to sleep, bathe, or swim in. A great rule of thumb is to accessorize with your jewelry last! Be sure to apply perfume and hair products before putting on your precious jewels. Vermeil and sterling silver jewelry will tarnish, so to help keep that to a minimum, please store your jewelry in the box provided when not worn. While gold fill jewelry does not tarnish in the same way, it is a good idea to also protect it in a box, to help prevent scratching or damaging of any wire wrapped pieces. To clean, you can use a mild jeweler's cleaner that is safe for gemstones and gold. Please do NOT dip pearls, opals, or any other porous stone.
